Five (5) Ways to Manage Arthritis

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Managing arthritis involves staying healthy and adopting other self-management strategies. Here are 4 tips that can help you reduce the symptoms and pain of arthritis:

1. Talk to a health specialist

It is important to get early diagnosis if you are experiencing symptoms of arthritis so you can start treatment as soon as possible. This minimizes its symptoms and prevents the disease from getting worse.

Attending regular appointments and following recommended treatment plans is also important to managing the disease.

2. Be active.

A simple and effective, drug-free method to relieve arthritis pain involves physical activity. Regular physical activity can help improve sleep and support bone health.

3. Protect your joints.

Injuries to the joint can worsen arthritis, so take steps to prevent or minimize joint injuries. You can do that by wearing protective equipment.

Also choose low-impact activities with low risk of injuries or stress to your joints like walking, bicycling and swimming.

4. Maintain a healthy weight.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also important for people living with arthritis. Being overweight or obese put pressure on your joints particularly weight bearing joints like the hips and knees.
